The new library in Ursynów is a project that focuses on locality, greenery, and everyday life. The building has been designed as a place for informal meetings, work, and relaxation – a space that you can simply walk into "on your way", without planning a visit. Its intimate scale, sculpted form, and use of natural materials make it blend seamlessly into the surrounding greenery, rather than competing with it.
Located among trees, the library frames views of the treetops, offering users a soothing connection to nature and forming part of the urban forest floor. The loggia and green roof allow for outdoor reading throughout the year, while the building's location respects existing paths, slopes, and places important to the residents – such as the rowan tree, which has become a natural neighborhood hub and entry point.
The square around the library functions as a local center: it connects the main pedestrian route leading to the metro with a playground, outdoor gym, and vegetable garden. The building opens up to its surroundings from multiple sides, becoming an integral part of the daily rhythm of the neighborhood. The layout of the interiors and courtyards allows one to "jump" inside from any direction.
The project draws inspiration from the urban planning of North Ursynów – modular, dynamic building forms and a reduced scale create a series of intimate, green spaces. The library consists of a sequence of small rooms, loggias, and alcoves that provide comfort for work, reading, and meetings.
The landscape design includes semi-private gardens, an outdoor reading room, a green amphitheater, a young reader's garden, an outdoor gym, and places for chess games. The shaping of the terrain and hills creates intimacy, and the planting plan is based on local plant species, water retention, and natural succession processes. This approach strengthens the ecosystem's resilience and reduces the need for intensive maintenance.
As a result, the library becomes an egalitarian and inclusive space – designed for all users, regardless of age or needs. It is a modern interpretation of Ursynów's urbanism: a place for rest, work, culture, and – in line with the project's concept – a celebration of everyday, creative "laziness."
