The “Opera of the Future” is a shared and diverse place, characterized by a timeless architectural language. The values underpinning the design, directly derived from Düsseldorf’s urban context, create an open and welcoming environment for all. The opera’s current location on the Rhine serves as an inspiring point of reference. As one of many cultural institutions in close proximity to the Hofgarten, it forms an inclusive framework that brings together nature, leisure, and culture. The new building adopts these values and, in the spirit of a “forum,” shares them with other institutions. The forum comprises a sequence of varied interior spaces opened toward green areas. Representative, generous zones alternate with intimate, atmospheric places, responding to the diverse needs of users. The forum extends along the streets at ground level and grows vertically, connecting the upper levels into a continuous spatial experience. The simple idea of creating a universal, human-friendly space appears particularly appropriate for a place of supra-regional significance. Through its spatial, local, and institutional values, the new “Opera of the Future” becomes firmly embedded in Düsseldorf’s cultural context.
